COVID-19 – Update (August 2020)

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities” (Rom.13.1).

We continue to recognise the God-given role which the ‘governing authorities’ fulfil, and the need prayerfully to uphold them in the exercise of their weighty responsibilities.

The Leadership Team constantly monitor the changing situation, with a view to safeguarding both the physical health of one and all, and the spiritual well-being of our people and our city, always in line with the most up-to-date government guidelines.

Congregational Worship

Now that we’re in ‘phase 3’ of the government’s ‘route map’ we have taken the first tentative steps back towards congregational worship, holding our regular morning service each Sunday under the limited conditions required by the government.

Face-coverings must be worn by worshippers, and while we share in recorded praise, there is (meanwhile) no singing: and, of course, on account of the social distancing measures we have in place only limited seating is possible.

For the moment, therefore, we have to allocate seating: so if you’d like to be present in the building for this weekly service of worship please contact the church office and we’ll include you in the allocations.

5 August:

Given the fresh imposition of restrictions for Aberdeen announced today by the First Minister, with reluctance we have taken the decision to put the limited return towards congregational worship temporarily on hold.

Although the restrictions were clearly targeted specifically on the hospitality sector, the First Minister stated that “people in Aberdeen City are asked not to meet other households indoors”, and we conclude that our limited gathering in the church building on a Sunday (despite all the measures which we have in place) would be construed as being at odds with the spirit of the government’s pronouncement; accordingly arrangements for such a gathering in the church this coming Sunday morning (Sunday 9 August) have been cancelled.

We hope that the re-imposition of these lockdown restrictions may not require to be extended beyond this coming week; we will, of course, continue to monitor the situation day by day and week by week.

Sharing in our worship on-line

All our services of worship continue to go out ‘live’ on-line from Gilcomston at the regular worship times (Sundays at 11am and 6.30pm and Tuesdays at 12.45pm). The ‘live-streaming’ starts a little while before the actual service time and can be accessed from the home page of our website. The services can still also be accessed subsequently as recordings available under the ‘Resources’ tab on the menu.

While this is meanwhile the only change to the arrangements which have been in place since March throughout the period of lockdown, it is a small but significant step back towards the fuller expression of our fellowship’s life and ministry in the heart of the city for which we long and pray.
