Authority
Read Daniel 3.4-7
“.. ‘whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace’ ..” (Dan.3.6)
The authority which rulers have is always delegated,as Daniel had underlined to the king (Dan.2.37): failing, or refusing, to recognize that will often, as here, result in the state appropriating to itself an absolute authority.
In what ways is our secular society particularly prone to this sort of perspective where the state becomes the ultimate authority?
What are the ‘images’ before which we are increasingly being called upon to fall down and worship?
Prayer: Father, I pray today for all those set in authority over us: grant them humility in the embracing of their authority and wisdom in the exercise of it.
